What is PRE-SAFE Braking?

Accidents happen in a fraction of a second. And sometimes it is hard to recognize the combination of conditions that lead to an accident because of the many distractions of the road. That’s why it’s good to have an additional set of eyes to keep you and your passengers safe.

Among all the innovations included in a Mercedes-Benz vehicle, the PRE-SAFE system is one that is worth mentioning.

Proactive braking

Simply put, the PRE-SAFE system will brake for you if you can’t. Approximately 1.6 seconds before the calculated accident, PRE-SAFE will engage partial braking if the driver has not reacted to the three acoustic warning tones.

Thanks to an extensive network of sensors, the PRE-SAFE braking system can automatically brake you Mercedes-Benz if there is danger of an accident.

It is active between 30 and 180 km/h and whenever there is traffic in front of the vehicle.

Protecting the occupants

The ultimate goal is to avoid all accidents, but if a collision cannot be avoided, the PRE-SAFE system will deploy of series of measures to protect the occupants of the vehicle by preparing the cabin for impact.

Upon emergency braking, the front seat belts will react and air chambers in the dynamic multicontour seats will inflate providing more support to the driver, front passenger and rear passengers.

Moreover, the front passenger seat will move into an optimal position so that the passive security elements such as safety belts and airbags are able to operate at their full potential. In the rear, the system will correct the backrest angle and seat cushion setting. The rear head restraints will also be raised to provide more support and protection.

If there is a risk of skidding on the road, the system will also close the vehicle’s side windows and the sliding sunroof. The window airbags will thus get more support in the vent of a side impact or a rollover. This particular PRE-SAFE measure also keeps the occupants inside the vehicle while the accident is happening.

Vigilance and alertness at the wheel are always the best ways to avoid accidents. However, anything can happen on the road and your Mercedes-Benz is equipped with the best in terms of safety systems in order to protect you and your occupants from harm.
