Three benefits of a mild-hybrid powertrain

You have likely noticed that there are a lot more mild-hybrid engines on the market and many new vehicles now come standard with a mild-hybrid powertrain. A mild-hybrid powertrain is different from a hybrid or plug-in hybrid engine. These engine use a battery with a larger capacity, sometimes enough capacity to power the engine on electric power alone like in a PHEV vehicle.

A mild-hybrid engine like the ones offered in Mercedes-Benz vehicles equipped with EQ Boost technology doesn't have enough power to function on electricity alone. The battery is a small 48-volt electrical system. However, this enhanced powertrain and 48-volt system allows the engine to use electricity to start up which will have significant efficiency benefits. The system can also provide a boost of performance as needed.

The new Mercedes-Benz GLC, for example, has 258 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, but it also features an additional 23 horsepower and 147 pound-feet of torque available from the electrical system.

Better efficiency

The 48-volt system helps improve efficiency by helping at startup, thus reducing the fuel consumption associated with starting the engine. Moreover, the system can help with other functions and therefore reduce the strain on the engine.

A smoother engine

You can think of the 48-volt system as a buffer, filling up gaps in power delivery and making the overall experience smoother and more linear. The performance distribution in a mild-hybrid engine is much more refined and never feels interrupted or absent.

Improved performance

Mild-hybrid engines tend to be quicker than their gas-only counterparts with a 48-volt system supplying extra horsepower and torque as needed such as when towing or under hard accelerations. This temporary and significant increase in performance means that the vehicle accelerates with a lot more conviction and confidence. Give us a call today to learn more.
