New 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL completely redesigned with AWD and better performance
November 04 2021,
The 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL unveiled last week has received a considerable amount of upgrades and improvements, many of which will significantly transform how the legendary Mercedes-AMG roadster handles and feels. On the other hand, the soul of the Mercedes-AMG SL, what has made it so popular, remains untouched.
All-wheel drive, rear-axle steering and a more power for the 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL
Mercedes-AMG engineers set out to make the all-new Mercedes-AMG SL more fun to drive with sharper handling, improved stability, and better steering. At the heart of this transformation is the addition of a 4Matic+ performance all-wheel drive system, paired to the engine through a new 9-speed automatic gearbox with paddle shifters.
The system has the ability to constantly vary front and rear axle torque distribution, ensuring optimal power distribution and handling across the board in every driving situation. There is no set torque split between the axles, the 4Matic+ system constantly varies the torque according to how the car is being driven and where it is being driven.
There will be two versions of the 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL, the SL 55 and the SL 63. The SL 55 gets a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 that delivers 469 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque between 2,250 and 4,500 rpm. The Mercedes-AMG SL 63 gets 577 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque, and will reach 100 km/h in under 4.0 seconds.
Both cars get rear-wheel steering for improved control and handling while the SL 63 gets a limited slip rear differential. No doubt about it, the 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL will handle better than the outgoing SL, but it should also rival established performance cars in its segment for cornering and overall agility.
The interior has been completely redesigned just like the exterior, with many components taken from the all-new Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The centre 11.9-inch centre touchscreen is all-new and there’s a new 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster as well. The centre screen houses the MBUX infotainment system and can even tilt to avoid glare. Another big change to the 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL is the addition of rear seats, a first for the car in a very long time.
