How to choose between the Mercedes-Benz GLA and the GLB?
July 30 2021,
Making a choice between two vehicles is not always an easy task. Often, you come to the end of the line because you decide to go with one brand rather than another, for example a Mercedes-Benz product instead of a competitor's model.
But what do you do when you hesitate between two models of the company. You know that you have two interesting suggestions. We don't want to make the wrong choice. In fact, since we're talking about two Mercedes-Benzes, there is no wrong choice, only a selection that is more or less in line with our needs.
So, let's take a look at what each of our top products has to offer so that you can make the best decision possible.
Style: sporty vs. classic
With the GLA and GLB, we are in the presence of two products with very successful lines. However, their personalities are diametrically opposed. With the GLA, you get a vehicle with a sporty look. Its stance is firmly planted on the road while it always feels like it's ready to pounce.
Looking at the GLB up close, you'll fall in love with it for other reasons. Its proportions are perfect, as it sits between a wagon and an SUV. It's also nice, but it has a more classic, traditional style. It has a very different personality.
In fact, if you take the time to look at both models and take a tour, you'll feel a stronger attraction to one than the other. That's your first clue.
The powertrains
There are three powertrains with the GLA, two with the GLB. Not surprisingly, the first two are the same. We're talking about 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinders that are tuned differently depending on the design chosen, not the model.
For example, each SUV has a 250 version that announces 221 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Then there are AMG 35 variants that carry a 302 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque variant of the same powertrain.
At the base, the performance is already interesting. It becomes exciting with the 35 models.
And if you want more, you have to look to the GLA, because an AMG 45 is on the menu. This one benefits from another 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, this time prepared by the artists of the AMG group. Here, the horsepower is boosted to 382 and the torque to 354 lb-ft, which is enough for very high performance and a 0-100 km/h time of 4.4 seconds.
The presence of this engine in the GLA family confirms the model's sportier vocation.
Cargo Space
Finally, and this is something you can tell by looking at the two offerings, the GLB gives you more cargo space. If you have a lot of stuff to carry, this is something to consider. Specifically, the trunk is 560 and 1735 liters, respectively behind the second and first row of seats. With the GLA the figures are in the order of 435 and 1430 liters.
Two interesting models, two relevant solutions, but only one possible choice, depending on your needs. Two road tests, perhaps, to help you make your selection?
