A Look at the New Mercedes-Benz Concept CLA Class

Mercedes-Benz recently unveiled the Concept CLA Class, a vision of what’s to come in terms of entry-level electric models from the three-pointed star.

Based on the upcoming MMA platform which shares many of its new technologies with the EQXX concept, this future compact electric sedan will be joined in some markets by three other models, including a shooting break and two SUVs.

This lineup of new CLA models will be the new entry point of the Mercedes-Benz lineup, but its design and technologies will be on par with the more expensive models.

The latest in infotainment technologies

Indeed, the Concept CLA Class will feature the latest developments of the company’s MBUI and MBUX platforms which will combine to make for a highly modern and digital experience for both drivers and passengers, thanks in no small part to the new full-width screen that includes driver information, infotainment contents, and a screen for the front passenger, all under the same glass panel.

Set at each end of this futuristic dashboard is a reworked version of the traditional round air vents usually found in Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Here, these rotary dials act as the interface for the climate control system which distributes air in the cabin via hidden vents.

A new direction in design

Outside, the Concept CLA Class embodies a new design direction that puts emphasis on lights and the iconic star logo to make the vehicle stand out.

This can be seen by the striking new headlamp projectors which take the shape of the Mercedes logo, in addition to the lighted star in the grille, which is surrounded by smaller counterparts that appear to be flowing from the middle of the car.

Two LED lightbars also highlight the vehicle’s design features by running from the middle of the doors and all around the front and rear fascia.

The rear end is also characterized by the distinctive star projector lamps and illuminated logo, and it also features a rear glass that is seamlessly integrated into the panoramic roof, which also features star-motif illumination.

Powertrain technologies inspired by the EQXX Concept

The Mercedes-Benz Concept CLA Class is more than just a design study as it shows what to expect from the first production application of the advanced drivetrain technologies that were developed for the EQXX Concept. Highlights include a WLTP range of more than 750 kilometers which is achieved via two new battery chemistries and in-house developed electric drive units that promise 93% efficiency from the battery to the wheels. Since the MMA platform will be fitted with an 800-volt charging infrastructure, pit stops will be shortened significantly from current Mercedes electric models, with 400 kilometres of range being added in just 15 minutes at a 250 kW DC fast charger.
