2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE vs 2022 BMW X5: more complete
October 13 2021,
The mid-size luxury SUV segment is full of interesting propositions. Two of them are definitely the 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE and 2022 BMW X5, two of the oldest SUVs in the industry.
After 20 years of rivalry, which one is more relevant? The following will give you a clue.
More affordable base model
We may be dealing with luxury vehicles here, but that doesn't mean we should try to exploit our clientele. That's obvious when you take a look at the offerings on either side. It's all pretty much the same, and anyone who can afford a little more luxury has the opportunity to do so.
However, for those who want the smooth ride of a luxury SUV, a very decent level of equipment and a powertrain that gives you value for money, you can opt for a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine version from Mercedes-Benz. This type of offer is not available at BMW. As a result, there's a difference of about $5,000 between the base variants of the two models. This is not to be overlooked and says a lot about the company's approach and philosophy.
A more practical SUV
Power is all well and good, and there's a ton of it on both sides. You can even get a GLE or an X5 (AMG 63 S or M version) with over 600 horsepower.
It's a tie, you might say. However, where there's no tie is in cargo space. With the GLE, 2,055 liters of space can be freed up when the seats are folded behind the first row. With the X5, it's 1870 liters.
All of this translates into more space for the second row occupants, too. In short, the GLE is more breathable.
The interior
And you have a better time, too. The GLE has a cabin that's miles ahead of the X5 in terms of design, modernity and technology. One look at the dashboard, dominated by a massive, incredibly clear screen (which brings together multimedia system information and driver instruments), is enough to let us know that Mercedes-Benz is looking to the future. Add to that the user-friendliness of one of the best multimedia systems in the industry, the MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience), and you really get the idea that we're somewhere else.
Let's be clear. The BMW X5 is an interesting and capable SUV. However, when measured against the Mercedes-Benz GLE, it comes up short.
