2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE vs. 2021 Volvo XC90: Innovation and Performance Keep the GLE Ahead

The GLE led the way for luxury SUVs, and it continues to innovate with artificial intelligence and other systems that enhance safety and convenience. The spacious GLE also doesn't shy away from the company's performance roots with two available AMG models. Here, we compare it to the 2021 Volvo XC90.

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE heightens the performance curve

The four powerful grades in the GLE lineup include the GLE 350, GLE 450, AMG GLE 53, and AMG GLE 63 S. The base GLE 350 is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre that generates 255 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque. This is better than the XC90's base engine, the T5, that outputs 250 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque in the Momentum model.

The GLE 450 upgrades to a turbocharged 3.0-litre powertrain that extends to 362 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. Comparatively, the XC90's comparable engine produces 316 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, landing short of the GLE 450.

The top end of the XC90's powertrain lineup is the T8 that is offered in the R-Design and Inscription models. It is capable of 400 horsepower and 472 lb-ft of torque, but the GLE's remaining two powertrains offer a performance envelope that is well beyond the T8. The AMG GLE 53 and AMG GLE 63 S are respectively rated at 429 and 603 horsepower.

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE is more interactive and roomy

The GLE adds an entirely new dimension of capability to the entire lineup with the pioneering Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX). It is an advanced technology that facilitates human-vehicle interaction in ways that other vehicles don't.

The driver and passengers can use voice-activated commands or touchscreen inputs to alter many vehicle functions, and artificial intelligence remembers frequent settings to help keep your vehicle personalized. It also features one of the most advanced navigation systems available, and more.

There's also plenty of room in the GLE. It has a total cargo capacity of 2,055 litres, which edges out the XC90's capability at only 1805 litres in the same configuration. The GLE also has more front and rear headroom and shoulder room than the XC90. Second row passengers in the GLE stretch out with 100 mm of additional legroom in the second row than its competitor, too.
