2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA vs. 2020 BMW X1

Now in its second generation, the GLA re-energizes the luxury compact SUV segment with a sportier profile, impressive powertrain options, and a lifestyle-focused interior that features a 40/20/40 rear seat for versatility. Although the GLA is a favourite, we think it's important to compare it to the competition to illustrate why. Here, we compare it to the BMW X1.

The Mercedes-Benz GLA features several performance options

The GLA 250 model features a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 221 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The BMW X1 xDrive 28i also has the same type of engine with a nearly equivalent horsepower output and equivalent torque.

However, the Mercedes-Benz GLA lineup doesn't end here. The AMG 35 GLA features a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that outputs 302 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. And when you want the highest level of performance the lineup offers, the AMG 45 GLA raises horsepower to 382 and torque to 354 lb-ft.

The BMW X1 does not have another model that competes with the performance of the AMG GLA lineup.

Both the X1 and the GLA include eight-speed automatic transmissions, but you receive a dual-clutch model in the GLA. This allows the transmission to shift faster, which improves acceleration. Critics rave about the GLA's smooth and refined unit that quickly changes gears to increase power.

Unique features inside the Mercedes-Benz GLA

The GLA improves the cabin design to add comfort. The front has more front legroom, exceeding the X1's measurement by 40 mm. It also includes more front and rear shoulder room.

When it comes to tech, the GLA moves far ahead. The MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) system provides revolutionary human-vehicle interaction. Driver and passengers begin voice commands by saying, "Hey, Mercedes." The system is able to flawlessly interpret commands and manipulate vehicle functions to your taste. You can also use a touchpad, a touchscreen, or steering wheel-mounted controls to interact with the system.

The GLA also offers features that are not offered or optional in the X1 lineup. These include: remote engine start, cooled front seats, Lane Keeping Assist, Blind Spot Monitor, driver restriction features, and more.

The Mercedes-Benz GLA lineup adds excitement to its compact SUV lineup and surpasses the BMW X1 in every aspect. You can shop for your GLA online with us. Our representatives are waiting for your call and can answer all your questions.
