2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE vs. 2020 Volvo XC90

The GLE is a mid-size luxury crossover that re-establishes itself for 2020.  The improved wheelbase, agility and aerodynamics enhance the driving experience, and the available horsepower levels offer the right amount for your needs. Because of the significant number of SUVs available in its class, we must compare the GLE to help you make an informed decision. Here, we compare it to the 2020 Volvo XC90.

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE delivers better performance

When performance counts, the XC90 has no contest over the GLE. Three advanced engines are offered in the GLE lineup. The GLE 350 4MATIC features a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder that outputs 255 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. The XC90’s comparable entry engine, the T5, provides 250 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. However, this is as close as it gets between the two vehicles.

The GLE 450 4MATIC features a 3.0L turbocharged six-cylinder with EQ Boost that increases the output to 362 hp and torque to 369 lb-ft. This exceeds the capabilities of XC90’s turbocharged T6 with 316 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque.

The big winner in the competition is the AMG GLE 53 and 63. They generates 429 horsepower and 577 horsepower respectively, surpassing the performance of the XC90’s hybrid engine that outputs a maximum of 400 horsepower.

The GLE also has a better transmission than the XC90. All models feature a nine-speed automatic that delivers smooth and quick shifting that results in better performance. The XC90’s eight-speed automatic falls short on ratios and performance.

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE is more than luxury

Inside, the GLE is much more than luxury and performance. The Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) offers a fresh way for drivers and passengers to interact with the vehicle. The system listens, learns, and helps by controlling features or finding destinations. Three touch interfaces provide other ways to interact with MBUX.

The GLE enhances utility with over 2,000 litres of cargo volume behind the front seats. It adds up to nearly 200 more litres than what the XC90 offers. Occupants also have more space to move around in the GLE. With more front and rear head and shoulder room and more rear legroom, the GLE doesn’t disappoint. Optional third row seating is available in the GLE and not with the XC90.
