2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE vs. 2020 BMW X5: Top Power and Technology

The GLE is an executive-level luxury crossover with access to some of the top power in its class. It also incorporates advanced technology--such as MBUX--that provides the most advanced human-vehicle interaction available in the industry.

To help illustrate these and other features, we compare the GLE to the BMW X5, a close competitor.

The Mercedes-Benz GLE performs

The GLE 350 4MATIC 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder features 255 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. It is a great choice if you want the best efficiency in the lineup. The GLE 450 4MATIC 3.0L turbocharged six-cylinder with EQ Boost raises the output to 362 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. Both models use a 9G-TRONIC 9-speed automatic transmission for enhanced performance.

Moving up, the AMG GLE 53 features a turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder that outputs 429 horsepower and 384 lb-ft of torque. The AMG GLE 63 S gains a handcrafted AMG 4.0-litre, eight-cylinder biturbo with EQ Boost. This model features the greatest amount of power and performance out of any GLE or X5, with 603 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque.

The BMW X5's engine options encompass a smaller power range. The xDrive40i (5- and 7-seat models) include a turbocharged six-cylinder that outputs 335 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque. Although this amounts to more horsepower than the more efficient 2.0-litre GLE 350, it falls well short of the GLE 450's capabilities.

The X5's top model, the M50i, includes a turbocharged eight-cylinder that reaches 523 horsepower. Although a hybrid is available, it doesn't reach the performance of the AMG GLE lineup.

Overall, the GLE has the widest and most powerful engine options compared to the X5.

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE is more than luxury

The GLE goes far beyond performance with versatility, passenger comfort, and technology. It has up to 2,000 litres of cargo volume and more front and rear legroom and more rear shoulder room than the X5. You can configure the GLE to carry the right mix of passengers and cargo your trip needs, and everyone can still stretch their legs out.

The Mercedes Benz User Experience (MBUX) system allows you and passengers to adjust a number of vehicle functions using verbal and touchscreen commands. You won't find something this advanced in the X5.
