2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC vs. 2020 BMW X3

The all-new Mercedes-Benz GLC is a compact luxury crossover that extends performance, refinement, technology and comfort with this year’s model line. The GLC offers several advanced models, including an upcoming PHEV. Here, we expand on the GLC’s capabilities by comparing it to the 2020 BMW X3 series.

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC starts with the right design

The GLC creates a foundation for its driving experience with an advanced exterior design that enables performance. Its lighter weight (1,815 kg versus 1,890 kg) provides the more powerful engines a head start. The GLC is also shorter (4,656 mm versus 4,722 mm) and lower by 33 mm. This results in a better center of gravity and enhanced stability, especially around tight corners.

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC offers more engine options

The Mercedes-Benz GLC series features advanced engines that range up to 510 horsepower. The GLC 300 includes a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder engine that generates 255 horsepower and 273 lb-ft torque. The high performance-grade AMG GLC 43 includes a 385 hp twin-turbo V6 and the AMG 63 S is driven by a 510 hp 4.0L twin-turbo V8.

The GLC 350e 4Matic hybrid will include a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder and 90kW electric motor that delivers a combined 315 horsepower. This results in a 5.7-second 0-100 km/h acceleration, leaving most of the competition behind. The hybrid includes a 7G-TRONIC PLUS transmission, and all other engines pair with the 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission.

The BMW X3 features just two engines. The xDrive30i includes a turbocharged four-cylinder that peaks at 248 hp, which is less powerful than the entry GLC 300. The X3’s flagship model is the M340i, which is fitted with a turbocharged six-cylinder that outputs 382 hp. However, this falls short of the GLC’s AMG series. Overall, the GLC family is equipped with power and hybrid technology that edges out the X3.

The GLC offers all occupants more front and rear legroom and rear shoulder room. GLC occupants also benefit from standard features not available with the X3, the state of the art MBUX system with voice recognition, Remote Engine Start, and front knee airbags. All models also include updated active and passive safety features that offer a peace of mind.
