2020 Mercedes-Benz C-Class vs. 2020 Audi A4: When Performance Counts

The 2020 C-Class is virtually a timeless representation of automotive advancements, powertrain options, and luxury that continues to set itself apart from other vehicles in its class. Here, we compare the C-Class to a close competitor, the Audi A4.

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz C-Class outpaces the competition

To achieve greatness, a luxury sedan must set the bar for engine capabilities. The C-Class does this easily with its choice of advanced engine options that deliver a range of power. Whether you prefer efficient midrange power from the C 300 or the higher performance from the AMG C-Class lineup, Mercedes has something for you. Let's compare the C-Class and A4 in this category.

The C-Class offers three engine options. The C 300 includes a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 255 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. For drivers who are more performance-focused, the AMG C 43 includes a 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder that increases horsepower to 385 and torque to 384 lb-ft. And the top-level C 63 S features a turbocharged eight-cylinder engine that inspires 503 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque.

The Audi A4’s base engine is 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder. However, it doesn't fare as well as the competition. At a maximum of 248 horsepower, it falls short of the Mercedes-Benz C 300. There is also the S4, but it only pushes 349 horsepower, way behind what AMG is offering in this class of vehicle.

The C-Class also features a more advanced transmission. All models pair with a nine-speed automatic, and AMG models include Speedshift technology. The A4 offers a seven-speed automatic, while the S4 gets an 8-Speed automatic.

The C-Class also has DYNAMIC SELECT function that can provide five driving modes that vary shift points, throttle response and steering feel including a notoriously sharp Sport+ mode that literally transforms the car into a track vehicle.

Overall, the C-Class finishes well beyond the Audi A4 in power and performance.

Enjoy more comfort in the 2020 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

Inside, the C-Class combines luxurious comfort, advanced technology, and plenty of driver and passenger room. Front seat occupants in the C-Class enjoy up to 1,039 mm of headroom, 1,067 mm of generous legroom, and 1,405 mm of shoulder room.

As your passengers enjoy the ride, a wide, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster offers you vital information, and a vibrant 10.25-inch centre screen helps you set the atmosphere.
